INDICES BASED LAND USE CLASSIFICATION USING SVM

Abstract
The classification of land is a method of providing details on land use and land cover and the
types of human activities occuring in that area.Land use classification plays an important role in remote sensing
for land use management and urban planning applications. The conventional pixel-based classification faces
challenges due to numerous types of land use and the diversified spatial information is mixed with each other.
To overcome these issues Indices based classification using SVM has been proposed. The proposed system
comprises of three steps: First step employs Multi-scale Segmentation to generate segment objects with high
homogeneity. In the second step the spectral indices based features such as, Normalized Difference Water
Index [NDWI], Normalized Difference Vegetation Index [NDVI] and (NDBI)are extracted.In the third step, the
extracted geometricalfeatures of each segmented objects are used to train SVM. Finally, the land cover is
classified into buildings, trees, waterways, and other miscellaneous land-use types. The proposed work has been
implemented in Matlab version 2016. From the simulation results, it is identified that, there are 980 buildings
and 1453 trees in the Onera test image and there are 109 buildings and 477 trees in DSTL test image. Through
SVM classifier, the number of buildings identified from Onera test image and DSTL test image is 952 and 80
respectively.
