PARAMETRIC STUDY OF TUNGSTEN POWDER BLENDED HYBRID ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING OF EN 31 DIE STEEL

  • Abstract
    Hybrid machining process is used to enhance the machining capabilities. Powder mixed electric
    discharge machining (PMEDM) is a most commonly used hybrid machining process. PMEDM has a history of
    enhancing machining capabilities. The main aim of this manuscript is to study the effect of working EDM
    parameters on performance characteristics of EN 31 material used in die and mould with cylindrical copper
    electrode. Tungsten powder is blended with EDM oil; serve as dielectric medium in hybrid EDM process.
    Machining characteristics of hybrid EDM is measured in terms of material removal rate (MRR), surface
    roughness (SR) and tool wear rate (TWR). Peak current, pulse on-time, powder concentration and pulse off-time
    were considered as process parameters and varied at two levels here in this study. After viewing the
    experimental results, it is seen that powder concentration affects the performances. Tungsten powder (size 3-5
    micron) concentration of 4g/l gives better results. Higher value of current is responsible for removal of more
    metal, whereas, low current reduce TWR and improves surface finish.
