AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF CRYOGENIC COOLING ASSISTED ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING PROCESS ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS

Abstract
Cryogenically assisted machining Processes are employed in industry for more than two decades.
The complete spectrum of cryogenically assisted machining processes encompasses the integration of
cryogenics with the conventional and non conventional material removal processes. This paper discusses an
experimental evaluation of cryogenic cooling assisted electric discharge machining (CCEDM) process. Peak
Current, Tool Condition, Duty Cycle, Gap Voltage, and Pulse Duration have been taken as controlling factors
and their effects have been observed on surface roughness of AISI D2 workpiece. The experimental data was
statistically analyzed. It was observed that a reduction of 7.41% in SR can be achieved if CCEDM is employed
in place of Conventional EDM. Surface topography of workpiece specimens was also studied with the help of
SEM micrographs. A very lesser number of micropores appeared on the surface during CCEDM in comparison
to the conventional EDM
