MICROSTRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATION OF MAGNETIC ABRASIVE PARTICLES

Abstract
Magnetic abrasives are widely used in the magnetic abrasive finishing process, these abrasives gives high surface finish in short time. There are various methods available to prepare the magnetic abrasives. The abrasives prepared with iron powder using various processes, one of them is sintering. Sintering is done in a furnace at high temperature in an inert atmosphere to prevent the oxidation. In the present work performance of MAF process has been investigated using sintering process, for this purpose iron powder was mixed with the Aluminium oxide in different proportions then this mixture is compacted in the shape of small cylinder with help of die. These compacts are formed by applying different values of pressures like 6.9 N/mm2, 9.3 N/mm2 and 11 N/mm2.These compacts are heated at three temperature for 30 minutes, these temperatures are 1100⁰C, 1150⁰C and 1200⁰C in a simple furnace and SEM images are taken of the surface at different pressure ranges before and after sintering. Magnetic abrasive machining is done on a mild steel cylindrical workpiece and percentage improvement in surface finish is calculated. SEM images show best results when sintering was done at 1200⁰C, pressure of 11 N/mm2 and conc. of abrasives 20 by weight and maximum PISF is 66.63 attained.
