ASSERTION OF IDENTITY THROUGH SPACE: A RE-READING OF TEMSULA Ao's LABURNUM FOR MY HEAD

Abhilasha Phukan.

Abstract
Temsula Ao's short story „Laburnum For My Head‟ can be interpreted as a critique of traditional norms and cultural values which silences the voice of women. The story revolves around the Naga women Lentina and her unusual fetish for the laburnum tree. Metaphorically, the Laburnum tree serves as a medium of liberation from mortal life for Lentina and also helps in the metamorphosis of her character which follows while she desires a place of her own , undisturbed by intruders or even her husband. Her waiting for the flowers depicts hope and fruitfulness of life which she desires to achieve in her lifetime. The Laburnum tree evolves to something greater than just a tree for her cemetery but it also acts as a medium which redefines her identity in front her own family. Her relationship with her servant also transitions from slave-Master relationship to being her confidant. This paper attempts to study how the writer exemplifies the idea of a liberated „New Woman‟ through the character of the protagonist and her unusual fetish for the laburnum tree which asserts a strong and promising identity in her character.

Key words: fetish, metamorphosis, identity, relationship, transition
