HYBRID TWDM PASSIVE OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR NEXT GENERATION ACCESS NETWORKS

Abstract
A novel system model of Hybrid Time division-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (TWDM)
passive optical network is presented for broadband access networks. The network is designed for transmission
in downstream as well as upstream direction with a transfer rate of 15 Gbps and 10 Gbps respectively. A purely
passive system module is suggested for 768 subscribers that can communicate at a line rate of 120 Gbps in
downlink and 80 Gbps in uplink over the common fiber cable. Shared network infrastructure helps in
amortization of the installation and recurring operational expenses. The impact of the external modulator and
extinction ratio is analyzed on the proposed system design. The performance of the proposed network
configuration is comprehensively examined by utilizing diverse quality of service (QOS) metrics. It is expected
that the proposed system model fulfills the broadband requirements of next-generation 5G customers.
