Abstract
evaluate the prevalence of psychological stress and compare the baseline characteristics between depressed and non-depressed ESRD patients.
Material and Methods
The study design was a cross-sectionalwhich included two groups (depressed and non-depressed)of ESRD patients who were attending haemodialysis sessions in Hospital University Sains Malaysia (HUSM). Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) questionnaire was used as a screening tool for depression.
Results
The prevalence of depression was reported as 56.8% among ESRD patients undergoing haemodialysis. Multivariable analysis showed high systolic blood pressure, low level of haemoglobin and diabetic ESRD patients more prone to depression in statistically significantinthe final model of multiple logistic regression.
Conclusion
The prevalence of depression level was higher among ESRD patientswithhigh systolic blood pressure, low level of haemoglobin and havingdiabetes. These factors might play a pivotal role asanindependent risk factors in psychological stress.

Key words: End Stage Renal Disease, Depression, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.
