MEASUREMENT OF BIFURCATION FEATURES IN RETINAL FUNDUS IMAGES

Abstract
The detection of retinal blood vessels bifurcations is the significant characteristics for the
diagnosis of primary stages of hypertensive retinopathy. Therefore, the precise detection of blood vessels
bifurcations aids ophthalmologists/clinicians in the diagnosis of the disease. The computer-aided diagnostic
method has been proposed in this work for efficient detection of vasculature bifurcations and subsequently the
computation of geometrical parameters such as bifurcation angles and blood vessel diameters. The proposed
work, is primarily designed to obtain diagnostically important connectivity information between the parent
branch and the daughter branches. The designed technique is assessed on the retinal fundus images obtained
from DRIVE open-source benchmark database. Evaluation outcomes of the designed technique on various
geometrical parameters are compared with the theoretical predictions. The designed technique shows a
noteworthy contribution in precise detection of blood vasculature. Additionally, the relationship between each
geometrical parameter can be visually assessed through the correlation graphs provided. The simplicity and
efficacy of the proposed method makes it easy to apply alone or can be incorporated with other existing methods
to provide a computer aided diagnostic solution.
