EFFECT OF WELDING PARAMETERS AND PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION ON WEAR HARD FACE COATINGS USING TUNGSTEN CARBIDE PASTE WITH SMAW PROCESS

Abstract
Hard facing is an important tool in material science in which a wear resistant material layer is deposited over base metal or substratum to improve surface characteristics. Ability to apply knowledge and consumables are available on the market to improve component surface. This technique has potential to deposit hard-faced layer with tungsten carbide powder on the substrate. Hard facing is only applied to specific parts of metal that are exposed to wear. There is often no need to protect a component's entire surface from wear. Hard facing can be applied selectively and in various thicknesses to suit the exact specifications of a piece of equipment, thereby showing the most cost-effective way to counter wear. And for its easy accessibility and durability of operation, Shielded metal arc welding process is most commonly used for hard facing. It was observed that there is a growth in micro hardness values as well as enhancement of wear resistance with an increase in WC materials. At lower current best micro hardness was obtained. It was also found that as the current increases due to higher dilution, the hardness value has decreased. It also was found that the sample has higher WC content and possesses fine grain.
