EFFECT OF DRY SLIDING ADHESIVE WEAR ON WOVEN CARBON, ARAMID AND GLASS FABRIC POLYETHERIMIDE (PEI) REINFORCED COMPOSITE

Abstract
The objective of the present study is to fabricate and study of comparative wear behavior of Polyetherimide composites reinforced with varying fibers i.e. Carbon, Glass and Aramid Fibers. Polyetherimide (PEI) composites with fibre contents 55 wt. % are fabricated using compression molding technique. Adhesive wear study of composites is carried out on Pin-On-Disc Tribometer. A pin of composites is abraded against a steel disc (Ra~0.3μm) under various loads i.e. 10,15 and 20 N. The coefficient of friction(COF) enhance with increase in applied load. Specific wear rate reduced with an increase in load, and the lowest value attained at 20 N load i.e. 2.14X10-14 m3/N-m for carbon reinforced composite. Addition of carbon fibers results in enhancement of adhesive wear resistance and low friction coefficient with a minimum value of 0.163 and 2.83X10-14 m3 /N-m respectively as compared to aramid and glass fibres. Composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) instrument is used to investigate the surface behavior through fibre failure and surface topology of the worn surfaces. It is concluded, that during dry sliding wear, the wear is mainly due to plastic deformation and ploughing mechanism.
