THERMAL INSTABILITY OF ROTATING COUPLE-STRESS FERROMAGNETIC FLUID IN THE PRESENCE OF VARIABLE GRAVITY FIELD

Abstract
A linear stability analysis is executed for the thermal instability of couple-stress ferromagnetic fluid in the
presence of variable gravity field and rotation. The layer of couple-stress ferromagnetic fluid is considered to be
heated from below. To find the exact solution for a couple-stress ferromagnetic fluid layer contained between
two free limits, the normal mode technique is used. The critical Rayleigh number for the onset of instability is
determined numerically and graphically. The sufficient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also
derived. It is found that couple-stress has both stabilizing and destabilizing effect under certain conditions. In
the absence of rotation, couple-stress has a stabilizing effect on the system if   0 and destabilizing effect if
  0 . Furthermore, rotation has a stabilizing effect on the system if   0 and destabilizing effect if  0 . It is
also found that magnetization has a stabilizing effect on the system for   0 and also for  0 .The principle of
exchange of stabilities is not satisfied for the present problem, while in the absence of rotation, it is satisfied
under certain conditions.
