APPLICATION OF RS-GIS FOR LAND-USE MAPPING AND CHANGE DETECTION IN PEKB COAL BLOCK, CHHATTISGARH

Abstract
Mining industry has been the oldest documented type of activity undertaken by mankind. Mining
of natural resources has resulted in economic growth of nations. However, mining is associated with severe
environmental impacts. Mining results in important alterations within land LU/LC therefore, land-use studies
through the RS-GIS techniques from 2011 (pre-mining) to 2016 for PEKB coal block, Chhattisgarh were
undertaken. LULC change was studied at core and buffer zone, where detailed studies were conducted using
high resolution satellite data supported by field surveys. Iterative Self Organizing Data Analysis Techniques
(ISODATA) clustering method was used to perform unsupervised classification using ERDAS Software. 9
major classes were selected. IRS-R2/L4FX satellite/sensor has been used. Compared to 2011 (pre-mining),
agriculture in the study area in 2016 increased significantly by 4.20% (an increase of 2,344 ha) due to
agricultural methods being followed by the villagers within previously fallow lands. Mining accounts for less
than 1% of the study area. The above LULC statistics for core zone implies that as on January, 2017
approximately 21.00% of the allotted lease area has been broken-up for undertaking mining (18.20%) and
creating associated infrastructure (1.80%). Within 4 years (since mining commenced in February 2013), 28.38
(5.65%) hectares of the mined-out area has been reclaimed and there of plantation has been carried out till
October 2016. By the end of FY 2016-17, plantation in the mine has increased beyond 56 ha. During 2012-17,
more than 1.4 Lakh saplings comprising mainly of native species were planted. A Sal nursery has been
established; such efforts have helped greatly in afforestation and might be attributed in part to the use of Tree-
Transplanter. As on 31st March 2017, approximately 5,499 trees (of girth less than 60cm) have been
transplanted in the mined-out reclaimed area and safety zone.
