Abstract
The language of the newspaper is created by speech, beliefs, and practices of writing. The study
aimed to analyze the meaning of newspapers‟ text of election 2018 in Malaysia and Pakistan. The theory of
Norman Fairclough (1995) of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is employed on the text of online independent
and mainstream newspapers of both countries i.e. „Malaysiakini‟, „The New Straits Times‟, „Dawn‟ and „The
News‟. A dataset is compiled from 2nd May 2018 to 15th May 2018 in Malaysia, whereas; in Pakistan, the dates
are 18th July 2018 till 31st July 2018. Twenty-five (25) news reports based on social actors on the issue
„corruption‟ is selected. The selected social actors in Malaysia are „Dr. Mahathir Mohamad‟ and „Najib Razak‟,
whereas; „Imran Khan‟ and „Nawaz Sharif‟ are from Pakistan, those are analyzed on the framework of social
semiotics by van Leeuwen (2005). Transitivity Analysis from Systematic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by
Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday (2014) is employed as an analytical tool based on the revised work of
Matthiessen to determine the role of social actors in different roles. Independent online newspapers of both
countries have shown a fair representation of social actors, in contrast; mainstream newspapers are seen as more
inclined towards their political private interests.

Key words: Online newspapers; news institutions‟ ideology; political hard news; Malaysian & Pakistani online newspapers; Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA); mediated discourse; linguistic choices; Systematic Functional Linguistics (SFL); Transitivity Analysis
