DIABETIC RETINOPATHY DETECTION USING DEEP CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKS

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by diabetes that can lead to loss of vision or even complete blindness. India is likely to emerge as the world's diabetic capital. About two-thirds of all type 2 and almost all type 1 diabetics are predicted to develop diabetic retinopathy (DR) over a period of time. If caught early enough, progression to vision impairment can be slowed if not altogether stopped, however, this is often difficult because symptoms may appear too late to provide effective treatment. There are four main stages of Diabetic Retinopathy i.e., No DR, Mild NPDR (Non proliferative DR), Moderate NPDR and PDR (Proliferative DR). We decided to use a 0 vs 1-3 bucketing of DR stages for binary classification. This paper presents the deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) architecture to automatically diagnose and thereby detect the stage of DR. We have compared accuracy of proposed deep CNN architecture with pre-trained CNN models like ResNet and DenseNet. Results are analyzed on parameters like dataset size, hyperparameters and preprocessing data.
