The Paradigm Shift in the Understanding of Homosexuality w.r.t Ruth Vanita’s Love’s Rite

Shally Dabra, Dr. Walunir.

Abstract
Homosexuality had been considered a sin and a crime until late 20th Century. It was regarded a
pathology to the normal variant of human sexuality and the people indulging in this form of sexuality were looked
down upon or even hated. These people were made to feel embarrassed with their own sexuality. The lesbians
and gays had to live, for centuries, under the fear and in the dark. But in last few decades, the human society has
shown a remarkable shift in its attitude towards homosexuals and homosexuality. People have started embracing
this different form of human sexuality more and more with even the constitutions of various countries providing
full legal recognition to the union of same-sex partners. The present paper attempts to highlight and analyse the
shift in the attitude of the Indian people to this section of the society with special reference to Ruth Vanita’s
‘Love’s Rite: Same-Sex Marriages in Modern India and the West.’ Vanita has been a champion of the rights of
LGBT and has extensively written about the same. Her aim has been to help this section of the society get the
recognition it deserves.

Key words: LGBT; Understanding Homosexuality; Gender; Marginalised; Same-Sex Marriages
