Abstract
It is found that the complication of diabetes mellitus like ulceration and subsequent
infections in foot are the habitual causes of both minor and major amputations. Earlier studies have demonstrated
that non endocrine function of vitamin D and its deficiency increases the risk of diabetic foot
complication. Objective: The intent of the proposed work is to survey the impact of vitamin D deficiency in
diabetic foot infections.Design: A prospective study was performed on patients who had fulfilled the inclusion
criteria undergoing foot and ankle surgeries with the diabetic history of more than one year. Results: Among 100
patients 18 were grade I, 28 were grade II, 34 were grade III and 20 were grade IV as per Wagner’s grading.
Serum vitamin D levels which were estimated at presentation. 28 patients had normal levels (>30ng/ml), 58
patients had insufficiency (10-30ng/ml), 14 had deficiency (<10ng/ml).Conclusion: The results cleared that low
levels of serum vitamin D is associated with diabetes mellitus related foot complication. A final limitation is that
we do not asses if supplementation can reduce risk or prevent the occurrence of these complications.

Key words: vitamin D, diabetes mellitus, foot and ankle surgeries.
