STREET LIGHTING AMENITY PROVIDED BY MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS IN INDIA

Abstract
Street lighting is an important civic service that provides guidance to the commuters and safety to the public during dark hours. Effective street lighting
system provides socio-economic benefits to the public such as elimination of accidents and economic loss; enhance security to the community,
promotion of public interactions and business activities during night time. Normally this service is available in developed countries, whereas there is a
shortage of street lighting facility in many developing countries owing to deficiency of financial resources. The contemporary study is an attempt made to
identify the efforts made by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) to provide street lighting facility and to examine the opinion of
the public on this amenity.

Key words: Light Emitting Diode (LED), Centrally Controlled Monitoring System (CCMS), Intelligent Street Light System (ISLS)
