Investigating the Status of Water Supply in Cagayan Valley Region, Philippines

Geraldine J. Paguigan, Miladis M. Afidchao.

Abstract
Studies have proven that excessive pumping depletes the groundwater, and it is now increasingly recognized as one of the significant problems globally.
The researchers used purposive sampling and involved 238 households of the four provinces in the Cagayan Valley Region, Philippines, and focused on
the information about the households' sources of domestic water supply, status, and experiences to water scarcity. The Local Water Utility
Administration (LWUA) provides water to 49% of the respondents, while 45% sourced water from the pump well, and 4% obtained water from surface
water like rivers, lakes streams, etc., and rainwater. Regardless of sources of water, 45% of the households experienced water scarcity, and the majority
came from the province of Quirino. The result of the study reveals that water scarcity is now being experienced in the region. The researchers
recommend for government organizations and institutions to focus on education and the creation of awareness about water conservation and the
adoption of rainwater harvesting to have an independent and sustainable supply of water, especially during the dry season.

Key words: water, supply, scarcity, rainwater harvesting
