OK Krokey: Testing and Evaluation of a Media-based Learning System for Biodiversity Conservation

Abstract
The study sought to test and evaluate the use of the Philippine crocodile storybook as part of a media-basedlearning system for school children regarding
biodiversity conservation in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (NSMNP). It tried to first pretest the prototype design of the storybook and tested
its effectiveness as a self-instructional material and later on as a reference material for science teachers in teaching biodiversity conservation. Using the
pretest-postest experimental design, a total of at least 125 respondents divided into treatment and control groups were drawn from the whole section of
Grade V pupils from four schools in Cabagan, Isabela, the Philippines. Results reveal a significant difference in the test scores of the respondents who
read the storybook as compared to the control group. Feedback derived from the test was presented to the science teachers who were asked to explain
further the lesson emphasizing the items that many pupils failed to answer correctly. A significant difference was again observed when the test scores of
the respondents who were first exposed to the storybook alone was compared to the test scores when they were further exposed to lecture by their
teacher on the content of the storybook. It implies that pupils can learn from the storybook alone but will gain more knowledge when they are guided by
teachers in learning the lesson on biodiversity conservation.
