ROAD ANOMALY DETECTION SYSTEMS: A REVIEW

Abstract
Bad roads are the reason for about 50% of road accidents in India. Nearly 30 people get killed
daily due to potholes. Bad roads add to the operating cost of vehicle and increases wear and tear losses.
Automated road health monitoring has become a hot topic among researchers and the agencies responsible for
managing the roads. With the use of vehicle sensors, smartphones and embedded hardware designed for the
vehicles; the overall cost of the system reduces to a great extent as compared to manual inspection of roads by
human or dedicated vehicles designed for road inspection. In this paper we have discussed and reviewed various
methods developed to monitor the road condition and detect road anomalies like potholes, speed bumps, cracks
etc.

Key words: Road anomaly, Accelerometer, Speed bumps, Machine learning, SVM, Potholes, Machine vision.
