COMPARISON OF THERMAL EFFICIENCY OF SOLAR AIR HEATER BY PLACING THERMAL MASS ON ABSORBER PLATE

Abstract
In this paper there are three different types of solar air heaters (SAH) used to compare their
thermal capability. First SAH has flat plate collector of area 1.62 m2 and having absorber plate made of
aluminium. Air is allowed to blow over the surface of absorber plate. There are baffles which are placed over
the absorber plate in order to produce air turbulence. In second type SAH chips of mild steel are placed over the
surface of absorber plate. Third type solar air heater has copper chips as thermal mass placed on the top of the
absorber plate. Air turbulence will be increased by the metallic chips placed on the surface. Readings have been
taken from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. These readings are compared for their thermal efficiency and outlet temperature.
This experiment is performed to use the scrap material as thermal mass so as increase the surface area of heat
collecting surface. This will add some extra heat for a given area of flat plate collector.
