STATISTICAL OPTIMIZATION OF THE GAS METAL ARC WELDING PARAMETERS IN HARD FACING WITH CONSIDERATION OF MULTIPLE WELD QUALITIES

Abstract
The application of GMA welding is a worldwide well known fact. It has application in the field
of welding of ship building industry, pressure vessels, structural components of bridges, petrochemical
industries, heat exchangers etc. it is also widely used in rail repairing work, cladding, hard facing, to make the
steel corrosion resistant. An experimental study of the optimizing technique named Taguchi based grey
relational analysis is conducted for the optimization of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) parameters in hard
facing with consideration of multiple weld qualities. This study helps to make best use of available resources i.e.
machine power and raw material and to get best quality weld in strength, appearance, and economy. To reduce
the no. of experiments conducted Taguchiís Orthogonal Arrays technique is used. Taguchiís L9 Orthogonal
array was selected for experiment. The input parameters selected for the experiment are arc voltage, welding
speed, wire feed rate. Three levels of each parameter were selected. The output parameters selected were weld
reinforcement weld width and deposition rate. In the experiment the weld width and deposition rate are
maximized and weld reinforcement is minimized.
The validity of model was analyzed by ANOVA. F test is performed to check the significance of parameter at
95 % interval. Pooled ANOVA is used to calculate the total error. The analysis indicate that of the three
parameters investigated speed, welding and wire feed rate has statistically effect on selected weld bead
characteristics .
