STATE OF ART RESEARCH TRENDS IN WIRE-CUT ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING (WEDM)

Abstract
Wire-cut electric discharge matching (WEDM) is an exceptional spark erosion process, and its
popularity has increased rapidly due to its processing capacity. WEDM is a great way to get high accuracy and
good surface finish. The WEDM process is compatible with traditional methods of producing superloids to meet
quality and production requirements with a high degree of accuracy. In this review, we discuss the multiple
performance characteristics that affect WEDM viz. Material removal rate, surface roughness, wire wear ratio,
dimensional deviation, kerf width, white layer thickness, micro hardness and surface integrity are studied in
relation to pulse-on time, pulse-off time, gap voltage, peak current, wire feed rate, wire tension, injection
pressure, dielectric concentration and polarity as input parameters. The review focuses on optimization studies
and future prospects conducted so far.
