EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION AND ELUCIDATION ON THE POTENTIAL OF PACKED BED COUNTER FLOW DESICCANT DEHUMIDIFIER

Abstract
Dehumidification is the way toward expelling the moisture out of air. The moisture from air can
be extracted by chemical as well as physical methods. Air dehumidification by the application of desiccants has
been contemplated as an effectual strategy for removing the moisture content of the air with lower energy
expenditure in comparison with typical vapour compression cooling system. The dehumidifier is among the
prime components of liquid desiccant dehumidification methodology. An exploratory investigation for
dehumidifier performance is conveyed in the present work. A concentrated solution of calcium chloride has
been utilized as desiccant with honeycomb structured PVC packing. The input variables employed in the
experimental work were air mass flow rate, solution mass flow rate and packing height. The outlet parameters
measured were moisture expulsion rate, exit air temperature, exit humidity ratio of air and desiccant solution
concentration at exit. The study concluded that the rate of moisture expulsion and air exit humidity ratio shows
increasing trend with input variable and the solution outlet concentration decreases with increase in packing
height.
