TRIBOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE AND ADVANCEMENT OF IONIC LIQUIDS AS LUBRICANTS: A CRITICAL REVIEW

Abstract
The awareness in green lubricant technology in metal cutting industries has led to substantial
attention towards vegetable based cutting fluids and synthetic lubricants. These days, the usage of ionic liquids
(ILs) in cooling-lubrication, as straight lubricants or as additives, has become a dynamic research scope since 2001.
ILs are organic salts consisted of several anions and organic cations that melt normally below 100 C. ILs have
distinct lubrication properties such as non-volatility, high oxidative stability, non-flammability, high thermal
conductivity and miscible with polar and organic compounds. Due to the good thermal properties, ILs can be used
as lubricants under severe tribological environments for which conventional coolant and lubricants are failed to
perform well. The use of ILs as lubricants in different tribological pairs (i.e. steel-steel, steel-cast iron and steelaluminium
etc.) and in metal cutting has demonstrated their adsorption ability on the surfaces forming thick
tribofilms, which reduce wear and friction. This paper examines and reviews a series of ionic liquids used by
different researchers and analyses their suitability as lubricants in different machining and rolling/sliding processes.
