REVIEW OF LOCKWOOD HILLER DESIGN BASED VALVELESS PULSE DETONATION ENGINE

Abstract
Pulse detonation engines, also known as pulse jet engines are a categorization of internal
combustion engines that eliminates the key components present in the rest of jet engines i.e. compressor and
turbine. Although all the internal combustion engines are low efficient, the utility cannot be ignored in rapid
moving world. Comprising of few to almost no moving parts, these jet engines could become the next go to
technology in the field of aviation, space and automobile industries. Though this technology was first observed
in the mid-20th century, scope of development in it are still fairly high. Using the geometry as the prime factor
for generating thrust through both intake and exhaust tail pipes, pulse detonation engines rely on the
compressibility of the intake air and the type of fuel for better combustion efficiency. Even though the pulse
detonation engines have some characteristic problems such as low efficiency and acoustics, the design
modification could be the topic of hot interest in the present world of engineers and researchers. This review
paper is composed of studying the pre-existing data available on pulse jets and formulating a path of future
scope in their advancement to be utilized by the military and aviation sectors.
