FUCOIDAN ALLEVIATES HYPERGLYCEMIA AND HEPATO-RENAL HISTOPATHOGENESIS IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus associated hyperglycemia leads to increased blood glucose levels and the
failure of various organs. In this study, the potential protective effect of fucoidan, a biologically active sulfated
polysaccharide isolated from brown seaweed Sargassum wightii on the homeostasis of blood glucose level and
hepato-renal protective functions were investigated. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (STZ-idr) were treated
orally with 50 mg/kg/day and 100 mg/kg/day fucoidan for four weeks. Bodyweight and weight of organs like
liver and kidney were varied much with altered histomorphology. Treatment with fucoidan ameliorated blood
glucose level, body weight, and organ weights. Also, the administration of fucoidan minimized
histomorphological changes in hepato-renal tissues. In conclusion, this study inferred that administration of
fucoidan at 100 mg/kg/day exerted a protective role against diabetes-induced hyperglycemia by ameliorating
blood glucose level, hepato-renal inflammation, and infiltration.
