GREENBELT DEVELOPMENT IN URBAN AREA BY EVALUATION OF BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF PLANTS

Abstract
In the recent era, modern civilization and urbanization is intensifying and demanding for rapid growth in industrialization, increased automobiles, causing depletion of natural recourses. The present investigation focuses on evaluation of vehicular emission damage, dust deposition on plants foliage growing along National highway-48, Thane, Maharashtra. The assessment on foliage morophology (stomatal index), enzymatic activity (peroxiadase), biochemical analysis (protein, proline) and heavy metals analysis of selected five roadside plant species were selected for the analysis. The results revealed that dust deposition, heavy metal absorption, protein content was highest in Tectona grandis and lowest in Acacia nilotica. The stomatal index of plants species found decreased, while proline and peroxidase content in plants was higher at polluted site than control area. The present investigation concludes that bio monitoring of plants foliage growing along National highway-48 will be helpful in developing greenbelt in urban areas.
