Abstract
Even after substantial progress in health determinants over the past decades, India has a large number of undernourished populations in the world. Food insecurity has been one of the enduring enigmas of contemporary India. Because we are still uncertain about which food we should eat and in which combination benefits the maximum in terms of nutrition status, the micronutrient malnourishment prevails in the population along with visible hunger. To eradicate this issue Spirulina is a very good alternative as it is a complete package of macro and micro nutrient. It is a blue-green alga that has been used as dietary supplement since a very long time and has also been successfully used by NASA as a dietary supplement in space mission. The current review focuses on the ability of the micro algae to be used as dietary supplement for eradication of hunger and malnutrition. The present paper a unique summarizes the results of various clinical trials of Spirulina for alleviation of macro & micro-nutrient deprivation and its ability to modulate immune functions, anti-allergic effect, hypo-cholesterolemic and anti-inflammatory effects.
