GREEN SLEEP SCHEDULING OF SERVERS FOR CLOUD DATA CENTER

Abstract
Servers in a cloud data center remains busy and over provisioned throughout the day. They are kept in active state 24/7 to meet the peak and low demands of user requests which causes wastage of power and electric energy at a huge scale. One way to overcome this power wastage is by reducing the total number of used servers or idle servers. Other solution is based on switching mechanism in which idle servers are moved to sleep state consuming low power and others are kept in active state. Current work is a simulation of the real-world cloud data center where our goal is to minimize the energy consumption by the scheduling of servers with multi-sleep modes. In this application, files are uploaded and downloaded by using one active cloud server and placing remaining servers in the low-power sleep state. The scheduling of servers is based on an incoming request to the cloud servers. The amount of energy to be supplied to the cloud servers is adjusted by using Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scheduling, Dynamic Power Management techniques, and a suitable supply of power for a cloud server is selected by Backtrack technique. This application calculates the total power cost incurred by a cloud data center when all the servers are active and when only one server is active and rest are in sleep. This application significantly reduces the consumption of electricity and power in a cloud data center and lays a way towards energy saving.
