CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY BASED ESTIMATION OF BONE LOSSES AROUND DENTAL IMPLANTS IN MANDIBULAR IMPLANT OVERDENTURE THERAPIES

Abstract
Background and Aim: The ultimate aim of this study was to evaluate peri-implant bone loss in implant supported over dentures cases using cone beam computed tomography. In this study, authors had genuinely attempted to assess the actual bone height around mandibular dental implants. All radiographic evaluation was performed by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials & Methods: At first, a total of 15 completely edentulous patients were screened from the department of prosthodontics. Complete dentures were fabricated by usual manner which was later retained by osseointegrated dental implants. Two implants were placed in each mandible bilaterally on cuspid positions. All these osseointegrated implant placed in mandibular arch were studied for bone loss. For categorization of the bone loss according to timing, all the implants were divided in two groups. Group I has the implants wherein bone losses were evaluated in first two month of osteotomy. The group II included implant wherein bone losses were evaluated in first six month of osteotomy. Finally CBCT was used to estimate existing bone levels around each implant at the time period of 2 months and 6 months. All four surfaces i.e; mesial, distal, buccal and lingual was analyzed for bone loss/levels by cone beam computed tomography. Statistical Analysis and Results: Statistical analysis was attempted by statistical software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The obtained data was sent to appropriate statistical tests to achieve p values, mean, standard deviation, standard error an 95% CI. P ≤ 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Out of 15 patients, males were 8 and females were 7. Total 5 patients were falling in the age range of 26-35 years. 5 patients were falling in the age range of 36-45 years. Group II showed higher bone losses than Group I. Level of significance evaluation by pearson chi-square test [for group I & II] revealed significant values of p for all studied surfaces. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, the authors concluded that there was significant bone loss on almost all surfaces of studied implants. Additionally, these bone losses were quite prominent after two months and six months of post operative phases. CBCT evaluation also confirms that only slight increase in average bone losses were noticed in six months post operative phase compared to two months. Such type of minute and precise detail can only be expectedly presented by cone beam computed tomography.
