ACTIVITY-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITY AND THE ENGLISH WRITING SKILL: A CRITICAL EXAMINATION

Abstract
Among the four basic skills of learning a language, ‗Writing‘ is a crucial competency for the academic growth of an individual. In one‘s professional life, it is essential to have a fundamental knowledge of writing in different circumstances. Writing - a productive ability - correctly referred to as one of the most efficient abilities. It is both discouraging and disappointing that even majority of students at university level lack knowledge in all these skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW). No denial to the fact but it takes time and practice to develop skills in writing but once acquired, it opens numerous opportunities on the professional job market. As compared to conventional approaches to master the writing skill, the learners of modern era who are more techno-savvy, find Activity-based learning as a more effective tool for enhancing this skill.
The present paper is an effort made to establish the fact that learning of writing skills through activities is both- more interesting and more effective. The paper gives a description of the concepts of writing and activity-based approach and also why the writing skill is so important. It concludes with the advantages of learning through activities and suggests that using activity-based learning exercises in the classroom environment will enhance students' writing skills.
