Abstract
The research was aimed at describing the causes of illness according to the Tengger people, and treatment-seeking behavior in the Tengger tribe. The study was conducted with a realist ethnographic approach to the Tengger tribe in Wonokitri Village, Tosari, Pasuruan Regency in 2018. The results found that the Tengger tribe categorized illness based on two causes, namely physical and non-physical. The cause of physical is the same as the cause of pain in modern medical science such as viruses, bacteria, poisoning, or accidents. The causes of non-physical, according to the Tengger tribe, are caused by the existence of a spirit of the haunted place, because of ancestors, and because they are unable to withstand the practice of Tengger shaman science. The treatment-seeking behavior in the Tengger tribe was based on the belief in the cause of the illness. If it is believed that the cause is physical, it will be treated by health workers. If it is believed that the cause is non-physical, it will be treated by a Tengger shaman. It was concluded that the causes of illness according to the Tengger people were categorized into two, namely physical and non-physical causes. The treatment-seeking behavior in the Tengger tribe was found based on the belief in the cause of the illness. It is recommended that local health workers be able to educate the community based on the findings in this study.

Key words: treatment-seeking behavior, health belief, local knowledge, Teggerese.
