  • Abstract
This paper talks about the English courses that are offered to the students doing professional courses in most of the universities and institutions of Uttar Pradesh, the adverse effects of such courses and possible remedies. It is a well known fact that everywhere, be it a government institution or a private one, we find students from different linguistic diversities, from institutions of different medium of instructions and from different social milieus. But the same course material, same pedagogy, and equal amount of time for teaching a language to a group of mixed linguistic background students raise serious doubts on the objectives and the expected outcome of such courses. The paper does a minute scrutiny of the syllabus for teaching English as proposed in the model curriculum by AICTE (most of the technical institutions and universities follow the syllabi as proposed by AICTE), discusses the problems and then talks about the possible solutions. Following are some of the questions this paper tries to answer with substantial reasoning.
Can we expect same kind of morale in the whole group of the students in such a situation? Can we expect same kind of outcome? Who is at benefit- students from CBSE or students of state Board- why do we have a particular kind of reservation for the students coming from a particular board? Has the time come now to move to a different direction now? In what direction can we move?

Key words: AICTE, CBSE, ICSE, State Board, Syllabus Designing, English for Engineers, B.Tech Students
