INVESTIGATION OF COMPRESSIVE AND SHEAR STRENGTH ON NOVEL ZIGZAG STEEL WIRE MESH EMBEDMENT IN SMALL SCALE MASONRY PANEL

Abstract
The new approach, Zig-zag mesh embedment technique was adopted to investigate the effectiveness of simple steel wire mesh embedment. Three different investigations were conducted to indentify effectiveness on mesh embedment. Firstly compressive strength (CS) test was performed as per the guidelines of ASTM C1314 with and without mesh embedment, mode I fracture study in mesh and masonry mortar and the average masonry prism was maintained 225mm x 110mm x 176mm. The triplet initial shear strength (TIS) test was performed as per BS EN 1052-3, and the average masonry prism was maintained 225mm x 110mm x 264mm. The considerable amount of mesh embedment in the mortar joint provides better performance. The experimental results of CS test were 10-40% higher than the control specimen. The energy absorption capacity was more in the mesh embedded specimen. In-plane shear strength test was done with mesh and without mesh embedment in triplet masonry. In TIS the control specimen possessed brittle failure nature. The brittleness was controlled with the uses of embedded mesh. The mode I fracture test on ENDB (Edge notched disc bend) was conducted to identify the compatibility between mortar and PNM mesh. The ENDB test results were showing 14 times higher than the control specimen. The crack width of the failure specimen was large. It was noted during the test mesh embedded specimen was not split in to two half.
