CHARACTERISATION OF CATCHMENT YIELD COEFFICIENT FOR A DOWNSTREAM RESERVOIR IN A CASCADE SYSTEM

Abstract
The aim of this study is to correlate the inflow to a downstream reservoir in a cascade hydel power system with the precipitation level in the catchment of the reservoir. Here, the purpose of the Maniar reservoir is to impound water from precipitation and the release from the upstream hydel power plant. It is observed that the correlation between runoff from a catchment to the reservoir yield varies much with periods say weeks, of an year, though the intensity and duration of the precipitation remains the same. Due to infiltration, there is a loss in surface runoff by way of augmenting ground water during dry periods and even at the beginning of a rainy season. But, there is a gain from the base flow/water table during rainy periods and it continues for a short time even after the rain ceases. The variation in yield is because of the difference in abstraction from precipitation in the catchment. The loss is not only due to infiltration, evapotranspiration etc., but also due to filling/detention in pot holes etc. Dry catchment and dry upstream river stretch causes a loss but, a saturated catchment and flowing river stretch yields a base flow. The Pamba River Basin cascade system is considered for this study. The downstream Reservoir, Maniar gets water not only from precipitation in the catchment but also from the tail water of Sabarigiri Hydel Project, Moozhiyar of Kerala State Electricity Board, situated in the upstream side. The study is taken up in such a way that it reflects all the abstractions in the catchment and the river stretch, from precipitation and tail water contribution of the upstream hydel power project.
