Abstract
Introduction:Compliance with protocols for handling diseases is the key to quality healthcare and excellence. Management of infections remains one of the most cost-effective methods available.
Objective: To assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practices regarding infection control measures among dental, medical and nursing students.
Methods: A self-administered, validated questionnaire consisting of 18 questions regarding knowledge, attitude and practices on infection control measures was randomly distributed among 450 dental, nursing and medical students of Bareilly city (UP). The data obtained were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the mean of knowledge, attitude and practice scores and Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare correlation between knowledge, attitude and practice scores. A p value of <_0.05 was considered significant.
Results: It was revealed that a majority of students washed their hands before and after patient examination and only 5.3% dental, 22% nursing and 2% medical students used antiseptic solution to wash their hands after patient examination. Majority of the students (83.3-93.3%) took thorough history of patient to rule out HIV and HBV status and also used face mask, gloves, eyewear, and protective clothing as standard infection control measures (87.3-98.7%). Nearly 72-82.7% of students concurred on the importance of disinfection of chair, clinic and medical office. In clinical practice, 86-92.7% students used autoclave for sterilization of their instruments. Majority of the students (76.6-99.3%) knew about PEP in case of needle contamination. Significant linear correlation was seen between knowledge-attitude, attitude-practice and knowledge- practice scores were -0.06, 0.9 and -0.06 respectively. (p≤0.01).
Conclusion: The level of knowledge, attitude and practices regarding infection control measures was satisfactory among all students. Further, rigorous training on infection control measures prior to graduation and mandatory hepatitis B immunization of students before exposure to clinical practice.

Key words: Infection control, dental, nursing and medical students
