FACTOR ANALYSIS: THE ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL OF BANGLADESHI EFL LEARNERS AT TERTIARY LEVEL

Abstract
Purpose of the study: This article concentrates on the factors responsible for the barriers of the
speaking difficulties in English language of the tertiary level learners and the principal aim of this research is to
minimize and categorize the factors in order to improve those weak areas of speaking skill and expunge the
barriers from the systems of the external environment.
Methodology: This is a quantitative research solely based on the primary data by using a likert scaled
questionnaire from 113 ELT teachers and 151 MA in English studentsí among 29 different public and private
universities of Bangladesh during the timeframe of March 2019 to February 2020. This questionnaire is actually
based on the information on some secondary resources and researcherís own experience. This data is processed
by the operation of Factor Analysis through the SPSS 20 to produce the results of this research.
Main Findings: After running Factor Analysis through SPSS 20, the total 22 factors responsible for the
barriers of this productive skill are condensed to 7 significant factors, e.g. lack of systematic support, anxiety,
learnersí ineptness, and impact of mother tongue, rural background, social class and paucity of using interesting
methods for speaking skill by teachers.
Applications of the study: This study can benefit ELT practitioner, material and curriculum writers,
administrators and the stakeholders of NCTB and UGC, to take decisions for incorporating marks on speaking
in the public exam and for improving the speaking skill and the design of the text for the tertiary level students.
Novelty/Originality of the work: Previously lots of works have been found on improving speaking skill and
using motivational strategy but very few researches have been done on the factors impeding speaking skill of
the tertiary level learners in Bangladesh. None of the former researches are conducted by using quantitative
strategy. But this research used factor analysis by utilizing SPSS 20 more explicitly and effectively
