A REVIEW ON FRICTION STIR WELDING OF INCONEL ALLOYS

Abstract
Nickel-based superalloys are increasingly required more than traditional metallic materials because of their properties like oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, which is suitable for application in extreme environments subjected to high pressure and temperature. Because of these advantages, Inconel alloys are primarily used to develop energy-efficient and high-performance industrial turbine engines and high-temperature components. Despite these advantages of Inconel alloys, there are lots of restrictions in joining these superalloys by the traditional fusion welding process. These restrictions lead us to the use of solid-state welding methods like the FSW process, for welding Inconel alloys. This paper gives a knowledge of the process of Friction Stir Welding of Inconel alloys highlighting characteristics of Inconel alloys, and details about the method used. Also, this paper will show the results of different investigation works concerning the behavior of tensile properties macro and microstructure, microhardness, and flaws in the FSW joint of the alloy. This review concludes with recommendations for future studies that can be made in this area.
