AUTOMATED DETECTION OF EWING SARCOMA FOR COMPUTER AIDED DIAGNOSIS

Abstract
Ewing sarcoma is a dangerous tumour that develops within the bones or in the delicate tissue around the bones
primarily the pelvis, arms, legs, ribs, or spine. Ewing sarcoma can spread to the lungs, bones and bone marrow.
A combination of medical examinations is used in the prognosis of Ewing Sarcoma. The initial phase in
diagnosing essential bone cancer growth is the entire clinical history and physical assessment along with a blood
test. Furthermore, X-ray and MRIs are used to gain a greater level of understanding of cancer which
consequently results in a well-planned treatment. It is crucial to diagnose Ewing Sarcoma timely as the patients
may have raised degrees of alkaline phosphatase. Doctors use several medical exams to predict the best
treatment. Manual segmentation of the tumour for cancer determination, from a lot of MRIs produced in clinical
everyday practice, is a troublesome and tedious assignment. Not many algorithms have been developed for the
detection of Ewing Sarcoma. This paper proposes a threshold-based method of image segmentation to determine
the tumour in an MRI. Prior to image segmentation, the MRI is pre-processed, where the image is enhanced to
give enhanced results. Qualitative analysis is carried out to evaluate the proposed method.
