Abstract
Worldwide, stroke has been the cause of suffering for approximately 15 million people each year. For the people above 60 years, stroke is second major cause of the death according to WHO and fifth leading cause in the people aged 1560 years old. The present study aims to analyze the prevalence and clinical profile of patients presenting with stroke reporting in the tertiary health care centers. This study was carried on in the Department of Neurology at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar, Punjab from January 2019 to January 2020. A total of 101 subjects who presented with the symptoms of stroke were assessed for the stroke prevalence and also analyzed on the basis of type of stroke, TOAST criteria, ASPECT criteria, NIHSS score and duration. Among the population, the age group of 61-70 year was found to be the highest in the stroke incidence which comprised of 31.6% subjects. Ischemic stroke (83.1%) was more than the hemorrhagic stroke (16.8%). Small vessel occlusion was among leading risk factors for both types of the stroke and comprising around 36.6% followed by large artery scelrosis comprising approximately 2.7%. Moreover, leukoaraiosis was seen in 55.4 % subjects. Also the ASPECT ratio <7 was seen in 24.7 % subjects (20.7% in ischemic and 3.9 % in hemorrhagic stroke). A double burden of both communicable as well as noncommunicable diseases are faced continuously in India and other such developing countries. One of the major causes of death and disability in India is attributed to stroke
