Comparative assessment of impact of Bisphenol A and Bisphenol S on hematological parameters in rats after 4 weeks exposure

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analog bisphenol S (BPS) are extensively used in the manufacturing of polycarbonates, epoxy resin and thermal paper. The exposure of biological systems to these chemicals has been reported. BPA has been shown to incite many toxic impacts on human health. Therefore, it is being successively substituted by BPS. There are evidences that BPS may be similar to BPA in terms of toxicity. As compared to a large number of studies on BPA, research on BPS has remained limited. There is paucity of data on effects of both these chemicals on hematological parameters. We therefore examined the impact of BPA and BPS on hematological parameters in rats. Randomly selected, apparently healthy 16 male albino rats (175- 225gm) were divided into 4 groups. In group I, rats were administered 0.5ml/rat/day of plain drinking water by oral gavage. In group II, animals were given 0.5ml/rat/day of 20% dimethylsulphoxide. This group served as control. In group III and group IV, rats were administered BPA and BPS (50 mg/kg bodyweight/day) respectively for four weeks. Whole blood samples withdrawn before and after the treatment period were used for assessment of total red blood cell (TRBC) counts, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), RBC indices, total leucocyte count, differential cell count and clotting time. Both the bisphenols induced similar and significant reduction in TRBC counts, Hb concentration and PCV with no significant changes in RBC indices and leucogram. Therefore, it may be concluded that both the bisphenols induced normocytic normochromic anemia in adult male rats after four week exposure without altering the leucogram and clotting time.
