Abstract

The purpose of the research is to highlight Pandita Ramabai�s travelogue, American Encounter as a reflection of women empowerment and analyse the problematics involved in considering the status of the �other�. There are certain factors involved in the word representation which have an effect on the reader's perspective of the subject being represented. Women empowerment was considered a farfetched idea during the nineteenth century or when Ramabai was present in India. Inspite of the social restrictions imposed upon women during the nineteenth century, woman like Pandita Ramabai mustered the courage to travel abroad and create an awareness of women empowerment in her social mission to America.
