Abstract
Both in vitro and in vivo tests show that cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) have antioxidant characteristics. This is a result of their surface's ability to regenerate itself in reaction to their local surroundings by redox-cycling between cerium's 3+ and 4+ states. Additionally, during redox events, CeO2 and CeO2x can alternate thanks to oxygen vacancies in the lattice structure.
